CyCon 2017 to Focus on ‘Defending the Core’

CyCon 2017 will focus on the fundamental aspects of cyber security with a theme of Defending the Core. The 9th International Conference on Cyber Conflict will be held in Tallinn May 30 through June 2, 2017.

“There is a wealth of approaches to the topic. We are asking authors to consider what is at the core of cyber space from technical, legal, policy and strategy angles,” said Sven Sakkov, Director of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence that organises the conference. “For example, lawyers might ask what is at the foundation of the international law system. Is the rule of law, the rights and freedoms? For research on technology, it might mean defending your systems at the chip level, the kernel level, the network core infrastructure level – we would like the researches to define what is at the core.”

“In the end, cyberspace is fundamental to how we organize our lives as individuals, communities and countries,” Sakkov explained. The call for papers looks forward to submissions that increase the understanding of what are the most critical issues within cyber security. Jason Healey of Columbia University in New York emphasized in his presentation that that cyber warfare should not be considered as an isolated function.  “For twenty five years  of the seventy five since Pearl Harbour, we have been talking about a digital Pearl Harbour.  It still hasn’t happened, so we are probably missing the point,” Healey explained.

“We need to rethink the nature of cyber weapons and what they’re useful for,” elaborated Brandon Valeriano from Cardiff University.

CyCon 2016 closed in Tallinn today. The first-ever CyCon on US soil will take place 21-23 October 2016 in Washington D.C.  Focused on a theme of Protecting the Future, CyCon U.S. will create a greater information exchange among industry, academia, and government entities at the national and international levels. CyCon U.S. is organized by the Army Cyber Institute at West Point in collaboration with the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence.
